Becky Faber, author and former Cozad English teacher, gives a program about the importance of veterans in literature on Thursday, October 10, at 5:30pm. Included in the presentation is All the Gallant Men, the 2020 One Book One Nebraska selection by Donald Stratton, a Nebraska survivor of Pearl Harbor, as well as information from Faber’s personal knowledge of relatives and classmates who are veterans, which inspired her book One Small Photo.
Faber wrote her first military-associated poem after a college friend died in Vietnam. She continued to write about those who served with no plan to publish the poems. In 2017, while working as a career counselor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, she compiled a book of 17 poems and 1 short story relating to military service and its after effects..
Faber holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in English Education and a PhD in English. Her forty-year career in education included teaching in Cozad as well as university-level positions as an instructor, academic advisor, and career counselor. For twenty-nine years she served as an Associate Editor/manuscript reader for Plainsongs, a poetry journal published in Hastings.
Her work has been published in academic journals as well as in poetry journals and anthologies. She serves as a board member for both the Nebraska Center for the Book and the Nebraska Literary Heritage Association. In 2021 the Nebraska Center for the Book awarded her the Mildred Bennett Award for “exceptional literary contributions.” The University of Nebraska at Kearney named her its 2021 Distinguished Alumni in Education.
